12 February 2018:
To Whom It May Concern
My name is Travis Truax, and I am submitting my application for an editorial internship with [ ].
I received my bachelor’s degree in English from Southeastern Oklahoma State in 2010. Since then I have done my best to stay nomadic and explore what truly tickles my imagination: the American West. I have taken several seasonal jobs in various national parks, including Zion, Yellowstone, and Olympic. I have been guided by great writers and great books, writers such as Wallace Stegner, Edward Abbey, N. Scott Momaday, Gary Snyder and Annie Dillard; Steinbeck, Twain, and London; Kerouac, Muir, and Whitman. All of these writers, and a bucket-full of others, have shaped my experience with the land and locales in which I find myself.
When traveling, I am always—as I call it—chasing after legends. This may be coffee in Salinas or an afternoon at a cemetery in Idaho. Exploring my literary imagination has put me on several strange roads and in several strange places, be it a foggy moss-ridden forest in California or stuck on the side of a rain-slick canyon in Big Sur, wondering how in the world I’ll ever make it back up to my car.
Writing has been the common thread throughout all the places I have been. It helps me to understand where I am and make sense of the situations in which I find myself.
Experience is the thing, in traveling and in reading, and what I enjoy most is the intermingling of the two.
I first discovered [ ] a couple years ago. Each time I visit the website, I am impressed by the quality of writing and sense of adventure in the articles. I would love to be a part of the team as an editorial intern, researching, reviewing features and books, and hopefully developing my own content for the site. I believe an internship with [ ] will give me a better understanding of online publishing, as well as experience in the world of travel writing.
Attached you will find my resumé and a couple writing samples. Please consider this my cover letter and application. Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Travis Truax
